How to turn negative thoughts into positive action in 6 easy steps

The first indicator that you’re experiencing a negative thought is the way you feel. If you wake up feeling crappy or as you’re going about your normal everyday activities you find yourself feeling low, down, irritated, angry or upset (among others), the chances are that you’re experiencing a negative thought.

Now some people would just tell you to think a positive thought instead and get on with it but for anyone who’s tried this, you’ll know it’s not that easy. When you’re feeling upset, angry, agitated or down the hardest thing to do is try and replace that thought with a more positive one. More often than not, the more you try – the more you just enhance those negative feelings. Unless you know the reason behind a negative thought, it’s very difficult to just switch it to a positive one. 

With this in mind, we’ve created 6 easy and simple steps below to help you turn any negative thought into positive action within a matter of minutes!

Why your thoughts are so important

Who cares if you have negative thoughts? We all have them some time or another, right?

Negative thoughts only become problematic when they drive negative behaviours. We’re not talking about obvious kind of negative behaviours like excessive drinking or violence. We’re talking about the small stuff you do. Or more importantly, the small stuff that you don’t do but should.

We’re talking about the self-sabotaging behaviours that lie beneath the surface. The ones that you’re not probably not even aware of. The behaviours that come from feelings of not being good enough or worthy enough. They show up when you’re scared to meet new people or you’re afraid to go outside of your comfort zone. When you’re terrified of public speaking or when you get anxiety about travelling. We’re talking about these small but significant negative behaviours that hold you back from living the life you deserve.

How to overcome negative thoughts 

The problem with negative thoughts is that until you confront them, they’ll just keep swirling around in your head making you feel worse and worse. Not only that but they’ll continue to drive behaviours that hold you back.

The only way to get rid of a negative thought is to confront it head on, in all it’s glory. This in itself can be a pretty uncomfortable experience but what we can promise is that by the time you reach step 6, you’ll be feeling a whole lot better and clearer about how you want to live your life.

We’ve been working through this process with many of our clients and have had fantastic results. So, if you’re ready to be free of negative thoughts, lets get started! 

 Step 1:  What’s your negative thought?

This is your space to be brutally honest with yourself. Those things you wouldn’t tell a soul – this is the place to jot them all down (just make sure you keep this document somewhere safe and secure). 

If you’re not feeling great right now, sit down and think about what’s been floating around in your head. What are you thinking? Have you just heard some good news about a friend and while you’re happy for them, for some reason you feel down? Or do you keep thinking that you can’t do something? Are you nervous or afraid of doing or wanting something? Are old conversations playing in your head? Are you feeling anger towards a parent or spouse? Are you doubting yourself? Whatever it is that you’re feeling – ask yourself what the thought behind it is.

We’ll be working through the following example as part of these steps:


Step 2:  Why are you thinking this thought? 

OK, so now we’ve got that negative thought out of your head and onto some paper (or the screen). Lets figure out why you’re thinking it! Something has clearly happened for this thought to pop up in your head? 

What has lead you to think this thought? You arrived here somehow. What was the trigger?

Step 3: What’s the belief behind this?

This is perhaps the most difficult part of this process. Your belief about yourself is the whole reason that these negative thoughts are cropping up. Your belief system is the engine that’s driving your entire being.

Your beliefs are likely to fall into one of the following categories:

a. Self worth/ approval  – this usually boils down to believing that you’re not good enough or worthy enough

b. Safety /security – do you believe that you’re under threat in some way? That you don’t feel safe?

c. Control – do you believe you have a lack of control in this situation? Like things are just out of your hands?

d. Connection/ love – do you believe that you’re not loved enough or at all? Do you love yourself enough to think highly of yourself?

Continuing with the example above, we now have this:

Step 4: Is this belief really true? 

Come on. Be honest. Is this really 100% true? You might be on such a downer about yourself and your life right now that your first instinct is probably to say ‘yes’. But we want you to really think hard about this.

Is there any shred of evidence (even a minuscule piece) that at some point throughout your entire existence where you can say that this belief wasn’t/ isn’t true? Dig deep here people. 

If the belief is not 100% true, even if it’s 99.99% true – move to step 5.

Step 5: What do you want to think or believe instead?

Ahh, finally some light at the end of the tunnel. Now it’s the fun part. 

Ok, so what we’ve figured out so far is why you feel crappy, what the negative thought that’s running through your head is, why that thought is there and what the belief behind that thought is. Most importantly of all, we’ve discovered that that belief is not 100% true – which means it isn’t true. End of.

So if this belief about you isn’t true – what is? The world is your oyster here. You can think or believe anything you want to now we know your belief was bullshit. Go crazy here, what do you want to think or believe about yourself instead? 

What you write down in this section can become your own personal affirmation because it resonates with you specifically. Affirmations tend not to work if they are not aligned with your belief system. The beauty of this process is that we’re building a new belief, a belief YOU’VE chosen to have. 

 For example;

I want to believe that I do deserve good things. 

I want to believe that I am worthy of good things

I want to believe that I am good enough

I want to believe that I am doing well in life because, I am. I’m being too hard on myself.

If this doesn’t feel right to you just yet, simply start each affirmation or new belief with“I am in the process of believing… ” 

For example;

I am in the process of believing that I deserve good things. 
And every day in every way, I believe more and more that I deserve good things
Step 6: How are you going to do achieve this?

They (the people in the know) say it takes 21 days to create a new habit. So why not try your new affirmations for 21 days? Repeat them any time you notice yourself feeling that low crappy feeling that lead you to this process. 

Aside from affirmations, there are also a number of other ways you can think or believe what you’ve chosen. What’s your action plan?

How are you going to show yourself that you do, for example, deserve good things? Now you have this new belief and these new thoughts, how are you going to prove to yourself that they are true? This could be in a number of ways. If you truly believed you deserve good things, what would you do? Treat yourself? Put yourself first? Pamper yourself? Speak up for yourself? How would you behave and interact with people if you truly believed you deserved good things? How would dress? Walk? Talk? 

Even if you just have one action point, you have something to build on and work with.

Once you have an action plan of what you need (and want) to do – get out of your head and start ticking those things off!! Not tomorrow, but today, right now! Go treat yourself, walk taller, carry yourself based on your new belief system. Prove it to yourself!

 By the end of this process, your spreadsheet should look something like this: A simple process of following the thought…. 

We recommend you hold on this log of your thoughts. The more evidence you have that your beliefs aren’t actually as true as you thought they were, the easier you’ll find it to overcome negative thoughts/ beliefs in the future.

How to turn your pain into power

The truth is, everyone has a sad story. The chances are that somewhere along your journey of life, something not so great happened to you. You may or may not even know it, but you’ve carried the pain of that sadness around with you for your whole entire life. Like an invisible anchor, it’s been pulling you down, holding you back in some way. Undetected, its been dictating the choices you make and the person you’ve become.



Some people have suffered inconceivable tragic events. Their sad stories are obvious and it’s easy to understand why they may engage in self-sabotaging or destructive behaviours. For the majority of us however, the sadness is so subtle, so buried beneath the surface that we don’t even realise that it’s there. That it’s silently weaving its destruction. But the clues are obvious, if we’re willing to acknowledge them. They lie in the overeating, the lack of self-control, the insecurities, the low self-esteem, the addictions, the anxieties… and the pain.

 So ingrained into our daily lives are these behaviours that we view them as completely normal. We tell ourselves that they are just a part of who we are. Yet, the overeating leads to obesity and a variety of health complications. The insecurities lead to jealousy or the inability to have a healthy, loving relationship. The consequences of addictions such as smoking and drinking are well known… yet every day, we continue to kill ourselves just that little bit more. Unaware of the reasons why. On autopilot, we just do what we need to, to get through the day.

These habits and behaviours that frustrate you, the ones that you wish you could overcome … they all started somewhere. There’s a reason you started smoking and there’s a reason you can’t quit, no matter how hard you try. There’s a reason why the thought of speaking in public makes you break out in a cold panicked sweat and there’s a reason why you over eat. There’s a reason why despite everyone telling you how beautiful and amazing you are, you just can’t see it.

These subtle but destructive behaviours can stem from anywhere. And because they are so subtle, it’s difficult to make the connection on a conscious level. It could be the harsh words of an overly strict parent, the constant mocking by a sibling or the fear of losing a loved one. Childhood events such as these, which can seem minor through the passage of time can impact your life in ways you cannot even begin to imagine. Yet, every day – the effects are there, showing up in every day habits… in the drag of a cigarette or the secret night time cookie binge.


We hear stories from clients of all different backgrounds who are struggling with anxiety, eating disorders, phobias or addictions. We listen to clients trying to rationalise these behaviours and trying to figure out why they just can’t stop doing what they’re doing. We also hear about the impact of these habits and how destructive they really are.

Our aim isn’t to analyse these behaviours but instead to find the root cause through Hypnosis. Once we know what the initial trigger is, the healing can really begin. The best part is, once a client walks out of our office (or ends the Skype call) they don’t have to do an ounce of work to change. The shift has already occurred and will continue to grow. We as therapists have the unique privilege of witnessing this transformation right before our eyes.

Real life case studies:

1. Kat

Last year we met Kat who in her view grew up in the perfect family and was always supported and encouraged in everything she did. Kat couldn’t understand why with all this support and a loving family, she was so insecure about singing in public despite having a beautiful voice. During our session, Kat discovered that whilst she was overly encouraged in all her artistic endeavours, her singing was never acknowledged by her family let alone praised. Without her being aware of it on a conscious level, this lack of acknowledgement had led to years of insecurities as an adult. We were able to assist Kat in healing those experiences through Hypnosis and empowering her to sing in public with confidence.

Kat says:

“Both times I saw Neeta, she took me back to places where I was surprised to find myself, and helped me make missing links to what was happening in my current life (due to past key moments that somehow shifted my beliefs). I didn’t even realise those things were affecting me. Knowing this allowed me to take action and allow some healing to take place.”

2. Nane

Then there was Nane who came to us as Pro Bono client. Nane had spent thousands of pounds calling Psychic hotlines, searching for answers as to why her life wasn’t where she wanted it to be.  Because of this, she had to sell her home and was struggling financially. We were able to help Nane overcome the unresolved pain she experienced as a child. She discovered that on a subconscious level, she had been carrying around the pain, sadness and fear she felt as a child of not being heard and not being stood up for. This resulted in many self-sabotaging behaviours that Nane was still engaging in well into her late 40s!

Following two lengthy sessions via Skype, Nane reported that she had made more progress with 2 sessions of Hypnotherapy than she had in 20 years of conventional therapy. She had a renewed love of life and had repaired broken relationships with family. She was dating again; the sale of her house had gone through and for the first time in a long time she was feeling hopeful about the future. In fact, her third session with us was just to tell us that she didn’t actually have any issues to discuss!

3. Jennani

Jennani contacted us during the breakdown of her 10-year marriage. Her husband was leaving her weeks after the birth of their first child. Jennani was desperate to save her marriage despite it not being a happy one. After just one session, Jennani says:

“Hypnotherapy made me able to see my underlying problem that I had for years but never thought about it. I cared way too much about others but I was scared to show my emotions to them. I also forgot to love me first. Now I realize that I have to love myself first in order to be able to give love to others. It has changed my attitude towards life and people I love!”

4. Ozlem

Ozlem booked a session with us after suffering with intense and unbearable period pain. For twenty years, Ozlem had come to believe that this pain was normal and accepted that it would be part of her life forever.

Ozlem came to see us because she was now at the stage where two weeks out of every month was consumed by pain. Ozlem was unable to leave the house and found herself in a state of constant pain and agitation resulting in social isolation.

During our first session with Ozlem we were able to determine that her physical pain stemmed from the childhood burden of having to be the carer of a younger sibling while her parents worked. On a conscious level, Ozlem was completely unaware how much this responsibility had affected her physically.

We helped Ozlem face these emotions, explore them and then release them… ultimately, resolving the pain associated with them.

 Ozlem says:

“I had terrible period pain and it was affecting all of my life. The pain was too strong and I was feeling tired, moody and lazy.

But now, this period term I didn’t feel the pain too much . On my third day l did yoga for 1 hour 15 mins and I did a run for 30 mins… that’s what l want …  I am going to gym 2-3 hours then meeting with my friends , living the day fully and don’t get tired easily like l used to be.

That was an amazing experience, it’s working on me very well.. I am reaching my goals..”

Day 4 – Unleash your Inner Money Babe Challenge

I’ve done these lists before so no great revelations today although this list is rather more extensive so a little more insightful.

Task:  Write a list of 25 things you’re grateful for

I usually only write 3-5 things I’m grateful for in one sitting because… well, quite frankly I run out of things to be grateful for! Stretching my gratitude list to 25 items was indeed – a stretch but I have things on my list that I’d completely forgotten about or taken for granted. I’d highly recommend this task:


Over the last 24 hours I’ve been called an ‘inspiration’ three times – yesterday by a client, then by my husband for working my butt off at home and today by a work friend. Funny thing is, I never thought anyone out of the 7 billion people on the planet would ever use that word to describe me.

The biggest bonus today however is that on my way home from work my husband called me and told me he’s been offered a job and starts on Monday!!! WOO HOO! Now this may not be a big deal to some but he’s been out of work for 4 months… so this is massive news for us. It’s a 6 week contract but that’s all good cos good things are coming our way.!


Day 3 – Unleash Your Inner Money Babe challenge

Thank god Day 3 is easier than Day 2!!!!

Task: To list the 5 feelings you’ll have when you manifest what you want at the end of the challenge.

Mine are simple:

  • Excited
  • Powerful
  • Strong
  • High – as in buzzing!
  • Unstoppable (I’ve worked out how to make my mind work for me)

I feel really good today and I don’t know if it’s a coincidence or not but this is literally the most productive I have been in years. I feel the high vibes from the ‘manifestation babes’ Facebook group and the level of love in that group is leaving me buzzing.

On a side note, I’m seeing synchronization everywhere!!!  14:14 15.55, 11:11, 16:16 – I’m taking this as a sign from the universe that I’m on the right track.  WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Why minding your own business is good for your health

We’ve recently come across the work of author Byron Katie who shares this remarkably simple yet effective tool on how to be free of anxiety and tension. It’s so simple you’ll be wondering why you haven’t been doing it all this time!

 We’ll leave Katie (as everyone calls her) to explain it in her own words:

 “I can find only three kinds of business in the universe:

 1. Mine

2. Yours

3. Gods  (anything that’s out of my control, your control and everyone else’s control – that’s God’s business).

Much of our stress comes from mentally living out of our own business. When I think, “You need to get a job, I want you to be happy, you should be on time, you need to take better care of yourself” – I am in your business.

When I’m worried about earthquakes, floods, war, or when I will die – I am in God’s business.

 If I am mentally in your business or in God’s business, the effect is separation.

 If you are living your life and I am mentally living your life, who is here living mine? We’re both over there. Being mentally in your business keeps me from being present in my own. I am separate from myself,  wondering why my life doesn’t work.

To think that I know what’s best for anyone else is to be out of my business. Even in the name of love, it is pure arrogance, and the result is tension, anxiety and fear. Do I know what’s right for me? That is my only business. Let me work with that before I try to solve your problems for you.

If you understand the three kinds of business enough to stay in your own business, it could free your life in a way that you can’t even imagine.

 The next time you’re feeling stress or discomfort, ask yourself whose business you’re mentally in, and you may burst out laughing! The question can bring you back to yourself. And you may come to see that you’ve never really been present, that you’ve mentally been living in other people’s.

The time for change has come (no really, I’m serious this time).

Ok, I’m just going to put it out there. Yes, I’ve been here before.

This is clearly not the first time I’ve vowed to turn my life around, to reach my full potential, to exercise that belly fat away, to stop eating crap, to meditate… yeah, you get the picture. Nope, definitely not the first time I’ve been here.

So what’s so different about now I hear you ask?

Well, during my little break away from blogging I’ve managed to set up and run a pretty successful little Hypnotherapy Practice in Harley Street. (I know, I can be impressive at times).

I was updating my website today and adding my most recent reviews and it just dawned on me. Holy shit! I’ve actually helped people change their lives. I mean really change their lives! You should hear some of the pretty cool stuff these people (who are not related to me or paid by me) are saying about me!

Not only that. I had helped most of these people turn their lives around by spending just 90 minutes with them! I shit you not.

I realised today. I have the ‘power’. I know change can happen. I’ve seen it happen. I’ve made it happen – for others. So why the hell aren’t I doing it for myself?

The problem with me (well, one of many) is that I’ve spent my whole life preparing, getting ready – to change. I am a self-help book junkie. I’m literally reading 3 books at a time because I don’t find the answer/ the secret in the first few pages so I get impatient and I’m onto the next book… searching, always searching for that elusive key to unlocking the big mystery on HOW to change my life.

But I know what the secret is. I have the answer (more of that later).

I’ve made a promise to myself today. Today is the day for change.

As I sit here at 1am writing this blog, eating the last Wispa bar in the house with my Green Tea and Ribena… I know that I am FULLY fed up of being me. Of making bullshit promises to myself. Of telling myself “tomorrow I’ll stop/ start”.  Sick. To. Death. Of. It.

I’ve had this uneasy feeling all day. I know that today is the last day for a long while that I’m going to let myself be so disrespectful to myself. So I’ve literally eaten every piece of chocolate in the house (full disclosure: 2 Wispa Bars and 1 chocolate mini roll). I’ve sat here and watched shit on TV all day, like a slob, with my laptop resting on my round inflamed belly. Because this is the last day I’m doing this to myself. For real.


Through my work with clients I’ve realised that the most important part of change is having a good enough WHY. If you don’t know why you’re doing it or you’re why isn’t good enough – you may as well sit back down and continue bullshitting yourself. Your WHY has to be strong enough to get you off your arse and moving. To stay motivated. To fight against the old you.

So here’s my WHY:

1. I’m 39 years old and I basically have possibly 3-4 more summers where I could legit get away with wearing a crop top (just once please God). Other than my bloated/fat belly, I’m pretty slim everywhere else. My parents good genes mean I still get mistaken for being in my late 20’s. This isn’t a pipe dream people. I could do it. J-LO rocks it so why the hell not eh?

2. I want to have kids (yeah, I know it’s a little late in the day but Amal Clooney is my age and she’s having twins!). I want a healthy happy baby but bearing in mind my crop top dreams, I gotta get fit so I can bounce back with ease (just like a celeb. LOL)

3. I’m going to a friends wedding at the end of May in France. I want to be at my best (or close to my best). I have time to make a dent and rock a Sophia Vergara style dress. When will I ever have the opportunity to do this again? I want to seize it. To enjoy the moment and enjoy being me.

4. I want to prove to myself what I believe in so strongly. That if you change your thoughts, you can quite literally change your world. I know I have the ‘power’, I’ve seen it working… it’s time to stop studying and time to start doing.

I’ll be back to talk more about HOW I’m going to achieve my WHY shortly… but for now, I need to eat my dinner (yeah, I know it’s 1am – I told you today was my last day of bad habits) and get me to bed for my 7am start.
